After being trolled on social media for his Hindu terror comment, a defamation case has been filed against Kamal Haasan. The defamation case has been filed in Varanasi and it states that Haasan’s statement had hurt religious sentiments of a large percentage of the population. It may be recalled that Haasan had commented, “Hindu terror is now a reality in India”. The statement was widely criticized on social media and now a legal case has been filed against Haasan. The defamation case has been filed under IPC sections 500, 511, 298, 295(a) & 505(c) pertaining to defamation, attempt to cause offence, intent to hurt religious feelings and to incite community. The case will come up for hearing tomorrow. Haasan’s comment deserves legal scrutiny since his statements are most likely based on assumptions and not facts.
Political pundits said that Haasan may be deliberately making such controversial remarks to gain prominence in the political scene in the country. Haasan has already expressed his desire to join mainstream politics and such remarks may be the building blocks for his political career. Such remarks are also to get sympathy from a particular community, so that it can be converted into votes at a later date. Haasan’s controversial statements have been strongly criticized and they are not very different from the statements made by terrorists. Haasan will be assessing the developments and if he gets the desired response, he might formally join politics.
