In the special elections for House seats vacated by Republicans who are now part of the US President Donald Trump’s Cabinet, Democrats lost miserably and went 0-for-4.
Republican Karen Handel has won Georgia’s record-breaking special congressional election, dashing hopes by Democrats to pull off an upset in the run-up to the 2018 midterm elections.
All the strategies that the Democrats tried during the election did not help them and none of it worked.
Polls closed Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. ET after a record-high early-vote turnout, and strategists say it is likely Tuesday’s turnout will surpass previous records as well.
President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence released statements congratulating Karen Handel.
In his statement, Trump said, “Congratulations to Karen Handel on her big win in Georgia 6th. Fantastic job, we are all very proud of you!”
Karen Handel was also congratulated by the Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan, who in his statement said, “Congratulations to Karen Handel on a hard-earned and well-deserved victory. Democrats from coast to coast threw everything they had at this race, and Karen would not be defeated.”
In the four races for red House districts vacated by Trump nominees, the Republican candidate won but the Democrat performed better than the party’s candidate did in 2016.
