The Haryana government on Friday ordered a probe into whether legal formalities were followed by the Dera Sacha Sauda while donating 14 cadavers to a private medical institute in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
Health Minister Anil Vij on Friday said that Haryana s director-general, health services have been directed to conduct an inquiry into the donation of cadavers to the GCRG Institute of Medical Sciences from January 1 to August 31.
As many as 14 bodies were sent to the private college “without requisite permission and death certificates”.
If the cadavers were sent by the Dera to the medical college, the legal formalities should have been completed.
The reason for sending the bodies must be ascertained, Vij said in a statement.
A Union health ministry note also mentions that the “explanation offered by the college in obtaining 14 cadavers from Dera Sacha Sauda without requisite permission and death certificates is a serious issue”.
On August 16, a few members of the Medical Council of India (MCI) had inspected the Lucknow college and found 14 cadavers in the anatomy department.
On January 6 inspection, only one cadaver was recovered in the Institute.
The Union health ministry has debarred the college from admitting students for two years.
The report, however, doesn’t mention the cause of the deaths.
Onkar Yadav told that the bodies were donated to them by the followers of Baba Ram Rahim, who had been “urging them to indulge in this noble activity”.
He also revealed that the Dera followers have long been donating bodies of their kin to many colleges.
“We have affidavits of all the 14 families who agreed to donate the bodies for research. We have asked Lucknow police to verify these documents,” he said.
Before the paramilitary forces and police stormed the Dera headquarters in Sirsa, a former follower of the Dera Sacha Sauda revealed that rape convict Ram Rahim asked the Dera followers to donate their organs, after their death, as a sacrifice to him.
Former Dera follower Gurdas Toor also revealed that he would later see doctors entering the Dera.
The revelation was made a day before Haryana police and paramilitary forces started a sanitisation operation at the sect s headquarters in Sirsa on Friday.
