In a major shift from his previous stand on China issues, the newly elected US president Donald Trump called his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and assured him to honour the ‘One China’ policy.
Trump’s phone call to Jinping also assures the US is not planning any major changes in its China policy and relationship with Beijing.
The officials from both the presidents confirmed that they spoke on telephone yesterday evening.
The White House spokesperson also said that both the presidents discussed several issues and claimed to maintain the relations strong and fruitful for both the nations.
Trump said that US will continue to believe in ‘One China’ policy and will maintain only unofficial ties with China’s rival Taiwan.
During his controversial election campaign, Donald Trump had accused China of unfair trade practices and its military position in the South China Sea.
