Donald Trump has been officially confirmed as the President of the United States of America today on the 20th of December. Donald Trump, a candidate of the Republican party, had won the Presidential election on the 8th of November by defeating former First lady and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He won 306 electoral votes in 30 out of the 50 states of America. Any candidate needed to collect 270 of the 538 electoral votes to win the election.
The voters for each of these electoral votes are party officials nominated by a political party. Six weeks after an election is complete, these voters come together at their respective state’s legislature and vote for the candidate of their choice/ who has won. As Donald Trump had won the election, he was bound to get those votes.
There has been some controversy about this process with certain distraught Democrats protesting Trump’s victory and asking these voters to not vote for Trump. Some Hollywood celebrities and Grandees made a video requesting these voters to vote for anyone but Trump, but their pleas fell on deaf ears as Trump was voted to be the President.
Donald Trump is expected to be sworn in as the President on the 20th of January 2017. He will inherit a nation that is divided along racial, religious and economic lines. Many leading politicians and journalists have tried to downplay what has been an exceptional victory for Donald Trump. They have reasoned that Mr. Trump may have won the electoral votes, but he lost the popular vote by over 2 million votes.
However, one thing which no one can take away is that this man’s career in politics is just 15 months old and he managed to defeat the establishment candidate who has been in politics since the 1970s. That is what truly makes him great.
