In an alarming situation, there has been a staggering 160 percentage increase in Gujarat’s villages in getting tanker for drinking water. The Gujarat state has around 1,20,000-km water grid; however from 2011 to 2016, a 160 percent rise in the number of villages in Gujarat getting drinking water through tankers have been reported..
As per state government, during 2011-12, drinking water tankers for only 427 villages were required , but now in 2015-16, about 1,137 villages need the tankers for drinking water.
The Banaskantha district is most troubled as 459 villages from Banaskantha district were provided with tanker water during 2011-16.
Banaskantha was followed by Bharuch in South Gujarat with 406 villages getting water through tankers. River Narmada passes through this district.
As per the Socio-Economic Review (2016-17), around 12,000 villages are connected with the water grid under the Rural Regional Water Supply Scheme, yet the drinking water problem is not sorted out.
