In a disturbing incident, villagers in Bhatinda in Punjab chopped off the hands and legs of a young man who was accused of selling drugs. The man later died in the hospital. 25 year old Vinod Kumar was accused of selling drugs in the area through the use of mobile phones. Around 6 months back, some of the villagers had asked him to relocate to another place. He had agreed to their suggestion and left the village, but when he returned to the village, he was attacked by a group of people, who brutally sliced his hands and legs. The growing insensitivity was apparent, as people were shooting videos rather than trying to help the victim by taking him to a hospital.
The police said that the accused was undergoing trial in some cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. He had come out of jail only recently, around 3-4 days back. Even when the police took the man to a local hospital, the villagers surrounded the hospital and questioned why he was being helped. Sensing further trouble, the police were forced to move the victim to a hospital in Faridkot, 45 km away. However, the man could not survive the ordeal. The police have registered a murder case against unknown persons.
