The Election Commission (EC) decided to cancel the by-election to the Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly constituency in Chennai on the basis of large scale bribing of voters by the ruling AIADMK (Amma) among other parties and candidates.
The EC also took a note of the reports of alleged role of Tamil Nadu Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar in vitiating the electoral process. The Income Tax (IT) department officials also searched his houses and other properties on Friday.
The IT authorities were quick to investigate the matter after receiving several complaints indicating Dr. Vijaya Baskar’s role in bribing the voters in R.K. Nagar Assembly constituency.
The officials also found irregularities of records regarding distribution of Rs. 89 crore to a number of politicians for further distribution among the voters. The officials also seized cash amounting Rs. 5 crore from the associates of Dr. Baskar and from his native place.
The EC has declared entire byelection process as null and void in the RK Nagar constituency. The Chief Election Commissioner, Nasim Zaidi, examined the report along with other senior EC members and decided to cancel the byelection.
