In a shocking revelation today afternoon, the Enforcement Directorate has found Rs 104 crores in the bank account of the Bahujan Samaj Party. The revelation came to light as the ED was doing a routine check at the Karol Bagh branch of the United Bank of India.
The Rs 104 crores was found due to deposits made by the party post the note demonetization done on the 8th of November. Another account belonging to BSP supremo Mayawati’s brother Anand was found to have Rs 1.43 crores.
The Rs 104 crores was deposited using notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500. Bank officials said they were shocked to see the party depositing such huge amounts of cash everyday and had to notify the senior authorities.
Ms Mayawati has clarified that the notes deposited were collected legally as small political donations that the citizens had given to her. Also, the money found in her brother’s account was his own, as he is an independent businessman. She alleged that this was a conspiracy by the government and the media to defame her and the BSP. She underscored the fact that everything was done in a perfectly legal manner and that the ED had found nothing illegal with the deposits made by her party or those made by her brother.
The ED is yet to release a detailed statement about these deposits, but they will be writing to the Income Tax department to probe of the deposits made by the BSP are indeed legal donations given by the people. The ED has asked the bank to provide KYC details of the bank account and CCTV footage of the days when the deposits were made.
