Hosts England thrashed New Zealand to reach the Champions Trophy semis in style. The match was one of the highly expected one after India vs Pakistan match and the stadium was filled up with the spectators to catch the glimpse of their nation winning the match.
An equal fight was expected by both the teams but England made it with a comfortable victory. England batted first. They could not play the full 50 overs as they were all out in 49.3 overs but by then, they have already scored 310 runs. Joe Root is the highest scorer with 64 in 6 deliveries followed by Jos Butler who scored a quick fire 61 in just 48 deliveries.
Earlier Alex Hales who scored 56 runs stitched a partnership of 81 runs with Joe Root before being dismissed. Ben Stokes was equally impressive with his 48 runs.For New Zealand Adam Milne secured 4 wickets but by then, he has already given away 79 runs. Corey Anderson secured 3 wickets and Tim Southee got 2 wickets.
New Zealand was set a target of 311 to win but they were bundled out for 223. Kane Williamson scored 87 runs Ross Taylor scored 39 and Martin Guptill scored 27 runs. For New Zealand, wickets fell at regular intervals though the fourth wicket between Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor scored 93 runs but wasn’t good enough to steer the team to victory.
For England, Liam Plunkett got 4 wickets whereas Jake Ball and dil Rashid secured 2 wickets each.
With this comprehensive victory, England has moved on to the Semis of the Champions Trophy.
