After China changed the names of six Indian cities in Arunachal Pradesh, Union information and broadcasting minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that China has no right to take such decisions. Naidu further said that renaming the cities will not change the ownership of these cities since every inch of Arunachal Pradesh belongs to India. China’s recent act is being considered as retaliation for Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh last week. It may be recalled that China considers parts of Arunachal Pradesh as its own.
Naidu’s comments reveal the tough stand taken by the Indian government on the issue of Arunachal Pradesh. It indicates that India will not bow to any pressure even when China may be the stronger military power in South Asia. The fact that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India was also reaffirmed by foreign ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay. Baglay said that renaming the cities in your neighboring country does not imply that these are owned by you. Some experts said that it was an act of desperation on part of China since it could not do anything about Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh. Chinese maps show Arunachal Pradesh as a part of South Tibet.
