Former hockey player Ajit Pal Nandal on Wednesday adopted 21 girl students of government school in his native Bohar village in the district.
Nandal said he would take care of their education, train them in sports and pay for their expenses on equipment and fees related to sports tournaments.
He said he received the inspiration to adopt girls from cricketer Gautam Gambhir.
School Principal Sunita Devi said the girls who had performed well in academics and/or sports activities and came from humble backgrounds had been identified for adoption.
Earlier Nandal, who has also adopted five boys who plays hockey
Nandal said he would encourage more sportspersons to adopt children to provide them better future.
