20 year old Zverev got better off 19 times grand slam winner Roger Federer in the Montreal Finals. The fourth seeded German player has defeated Federer with a comfortable margin of 6-3, 6-4.
Zverev who came after winning a series title in Washington was least expected to win against the Swiss Maestro but by defeating South Africa’s South Africa’s Kevin Anderson there, he has already become the youngest tennis player by winning 4 titles in a year and with the Montreal, it is his 5th title. He also became the youngest Citi Open champion. This was done earlier by Juan Martin del Potro in 2008.
Without giving out any further points once he attained a lead of 3-1, Zverev pushed the set further before he finished it off in a mere 30 minutes. Federer who had an impressive record of 5-0 in the finals this year has to be contended with the runners-up title. It is to be recalled here that Zverev has defeated Novak Jokovich in Rome earlier. Interestingly Zverev’s only defeat came in the hands of Federer in Halle thie year.
“This one against Roger is something so special for me because he was always a great idol growing up for me,” said Zverev who further added “The greatest player of all time, beating him in a final, not just any final but in the final of a Masters 1000, is amazing.”
Federer who was aiming for yet another title since winning Australian Open and Wimbledon this year was upset over the defeat.
