Fine or 3 months jail for not holding original motor licence

The State government made it mandatory for drivers to carry their original licences from September 1.

“According to Section 181 of the Motor Vehicle Act, any motorist who is not in possession of the licence could face an imprisonment up to three months and the same applies for those who carry laminated photocopies of driver’s licence,” the police said.

The new rule is being implemented as per the directions of Supreme Court which has urged all state governments to cancel / suspend license of those motorists who violated specific road safety violations while operating their vehicles from September 1.

“To comply with the SC guidelines, the state police have made it mandatory for all motorists to carry their original licences so that it could be immediately suspended or cancelled if the motorist was found violating road safety guidelines causing danger to others motorists,” a police official said.
