In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court today ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe former CBI director Ranjit Sinha’s role in the coal scam case. The SIT will be headed by current CBI Director Alok Verma. The court passed its order based on prima facie evidence of abuse of power by former CBI director Ranjit Sinha.
It may be recalled that a panel headed by former CBI special director ML Sharma was investigating the case, based on allegations put forth by senior advocate and anti-graft crusader Prashant Bhushan. Today, the findings of the investigation were submitted to the Supreme Court in a sealed cover. After the bench went through the report and evidence, it ordered further probe in the case.
The report prima facie indicates that Sinha has allegedly been involved in scuttling the coal scam cases. His meetings with various high-profile people related to the scam, prima facie point out that an attempt was made to influence the investigation.
The bench announced that Special Public Prosecutor for coal scam cases, senior advocate R S Cheema, will be providing the necessary assistance to the CBI Director and his team on various legal issues pertaining to the matter. It also asked the CBI Director to let the court know about the next date of hearing, the composition of his team working on the case, and approximate time needed to complete the investigation.
