After speculations that former chief minister of Maharashtra Narayan Rane may quit Congress and join the BJP, one part of that story has come true. Rane officially quit the Congress today and said that there was no scope for him in the party. Now, it remains to be seen whether the second part, i.e. joining BJP comes true or not. Rane has neither declined nor accepted that he will be joining BJP. He just said that he is still to decide and may take a decision soon. Rane said that one of the major reasons for quitting the Congress was that the party reneged on its promises. He said that Congress had promised to make him the chief minister, but that never happened. He said that Ahmed Patel had publicly announced during a press conference in Sindhudurg district in coastal Konkan region that Rane will be the chief minister after he joins Congress. Similar assurances were also provided by Congress president Sonia Gandhi as well, Rane said. However, it never materialized.
It may be recalled that Rane was the chief minister in 1999 when he was with the Shiv Sena. After that he had joined the Congress with the hope of becoming the chief minister again, but that did not happen. Now, Rane has quit Congress. His son and former Congress MP Nilesh Rane has also resigned from the party. It remains to be seen if he will join the BJP or launch a new party altogether.
