Former Manipur Chief Minister and the world’s oldest parliamentarianRishang Keishing died on Tuesday at a private hospital due to multiple-organ failure. He was 96.
On July 1 this year, Keishing was admitted to the hospital due to age-related health problems.
He was declared dead by the doctors at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences hospital at Imphal at around 8.15 PM on Tuesday.
Following his demise, the Manipur government declared a three-day mourning in the state.
The senior Congress leader is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters.
He has served as Manipur Chief minister four times .
Congress President Sonia Gandhi said she was “deeply saddened by the demise of one of the senior most leaders with a sterling record of public service of nearly 70 years and who was member of India’s first Parliament”.
Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, too, offered their condolences to the “towering leader’s” family.
