The Supreme Court of India (SC) ordered the Indian Central government to frame rules to stop the misuse of the sim cards within one year.
The rules to be created considering the government’s push for digitization and mobile banking.
The government has informed the SC that it will require at least an year to ensure the linkage of sim cards with Aadhaar numbers.
It is believed that currently there is no telecom firm is linking Aadhaar number to sim card except Reliance Jio.
The SC was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) related to the misuse of SIM cards. Currently there is no mechanism to access the sim card owner’s identity in India.
An NGO Lokniti Foundation has filed the PIL and requested the SC to order Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and government to manage the process of SIM card issuance and verification of identity.
