French Open 2017: Defending champion Djokovic losses to Thiem

Novak Djokovic, Defending champion lost to Austrian Dominic Thiem in straight sets 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 6-0 in Paris. A stunned silence has fallen over the court. The crowd can’t believe what they’re watching.

It is the Austrian sixth seed’s first victory over Djokovic and he will now play Rafael Nadal in the last four.

Djokovic was accused of “tanking” his quarter-final at the French Open today as he suffered a chastening defeat. Thiem put in a superb performance, but on a day of blustery winds, Djokovic showed little hint of the competitive instincts that have made him the world’s best player for so much of this decade. Tanking, in tennis, means giving up. It can carry a penalty fine for lack of effort.

The last time Djokovic suffered a bagel set at a slam was in the first round of the 2005 US Open, and even then he came back to beat Gael Monfils in five sets.
