As per the law enforcement officers in the state of Georgia, Congressional candidate Karen Handel and her neighbors as well as two Atlanta-area news stations received suspicious envelopes.
The authorities responded to the suburban Atlanta neighborhood Thursday afternoon after receiving a complaint from a resident who reported of receiving an envelope. The envelope contains threatening letters and a white powder substance. The police were quickly notified and street is now being blocked off.
Handel’s campaign in the past few days received number of threats and some of which have intensified in recent days.
As per the initial reports of the test on the white powder substance that was received suggest the powder consisted mostly of baking soda.
It is also reported that news stations WAGA Fox 5 and WXIA 11Alive received similar envelopes as per the FBI. An investigation is underway to see if they are related.
Earlier Handel had condemned Wednesday’s shooting that injured House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and four others in Alexandria, Va. Scalise has undergone three surgeries and remains in critical condition.
Handel is a candidate in Georgia’s closely watched, tightening 6th Congressional District special election against newcomer Jon Ossoff.
