In a shocking incident, a group of around a dozen boys openly groped and molested two girls in broad daylight in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. What is even more disturbing is that the perpetrators were carrying out their act as if it was a daily routine for them. They were laughing, joking and making videos of the molestation, even as the girls kept begging them to be spared. The video has created a storm on social media and everyone’s questioning the state of law and order in Uttar Pradesh. The police have been able to identify the culprits and they have already arrested one person. Further investigations are on to find the rest of the culprits.
Meanwhile, Rampur MLA and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan responded to the incident, saying that women should stay at home to avoid getting molested or raped. His comment has received widespread criticism and it shows the leader’s regressive mindset. Rather than taking tough action against the perpetrators, Azam Khan is asking women to stay indoors. It may be recalled that this is not the first time that Azam Khan has issued a controversial statement. Last year, when a mother and her daughter were raped in Bulandshahr, Azam Khan had said that it was a political conspiracy to defame the then Akhilesh Yadav government. He was directed to submit an unconditional apology by the Supreme Court for his statement.
