New Delhi, February 13, 2018: Yatra.com, one of India’s leading online travel portals, today revealed its Valentine’s Day special survey, highlighting the intersection between love and travel. The survey conducted amongst 1500 respondents divulged that Valentine’s Day is not just for young couples, but people between the age groups 25-34 years and 35-50 years are far more excited to take a break and go on a trip with their partner. With Valentine’s Day landing on a weekday this year, majority of the travellers have scheduled their romantic weekend getaway for the weekend prior, leveraging the holiday on Wednesday.
Almost 35% of those surveyed indicated that ‘buying a trip’ for that special someone is their most preferred option this Valentine’s Day, followed by a ‘romantic lunch or dinner’. Driving the new trend, people are also looking forward to spend the day indulging in activities with 37% preferring ‘sight-seeing’, 10% of them chose ‘shopping’ while 9% enjoy the ‘culinary experience’ and 8% opted for a ‘spa’.
Also, according to the survey, 26% preferred the hills to rekindle their love, with preferred domestic destinations being Pondicherry, Ooty, Assam and Shimla, while when asked about their international travel wish-list – Paris, Venice, Amsterdam and Switzerland, were the ones that made it to the top. Moving beyond the wanderlust, ‘romantic dinners’ are also considered as gift options to celebrate the day of love.
A majority of 39% of the travellers chose budget hotels, as it provided them with the luxury to invest on experiences and activities at the destionation. Speaking of accommodation, 28% preferred 4-star hotels, while 13% opted for Homestays. In the light of this Valentine’s Day, Yatra.com has also launched a social media campaign ‘#CheckIntoLove’ providing various offers in hotels to people who want to opt for romantic dinners and getaways.
Commenting on the findings from the survey, Sharat Dhall, COO (B2C), Yatra.com says, “Indian travellers are evolving every year and so is their preference to celebrate certain special days during the year such as Valentine’s Day. We see two different kinds of preferences amongst people at this time – one is to head out on every long weekend that comes their way, and two, is to do ‘Staycations’ and spend the money saved on lavish dinners with their loved ones. However, the larger chunk of travellers are those who choose short weekend breaks to exotic destinations, investing more in the experience than on accommodation, which is leading to a rise in preference for budget hotels.”
However, it is interesting to note that Valentine’s Day is not the only motivator for booking that romantic trip, as 64% of the respondents said that they would prefer to head out for a romantic getaway for their anniversaries.
Key highlights witnessed in the survey:
o Over 60% salaried professionals are making various plans to celebrate the day of love
o People travelling for weekend getaways would indulge more in sightseeing and leisure experiences on their trips
o For weekend getaways, 39% travellers opt for budget hotels and 31 % of them would like to spend Rs. 2,500 -Rs.5,000 on accommodation
