In a major setback to Pakistan, the British Parliament has said that Gilgit-Baltistan belongs to India, even though it is currently being controlled by Pakistan. The British Parliament also condemned Pakistan’s announcement of declaring Gilgit-Baltistan as its fifth province. It also termed the construction of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor as illegal. A resolution has been passed by the British Parliament that dismisses Pakistan’s claims to Gilgit-Baltistan. The area has been recognized as a constitutional and legal part of Jammu and Kashmir, which Pakistan has illegally occupied since 1947.
The motion passed by the British Parliament reads, “Gilgit-Baltistan is a legal and constitutional part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India, which is illegally occupied by Pakistan since 1947, and where people are denied their fundamental rights including the right of freedom of expression.” It may be recalled that Pakistan had invaded Jammu and Kashmir soon after partition and had taken control of the Gilgit-Baltistan area. Recently, the Pakistani government has suggested the conversion of Gilgit-Baltistan into its fifth province.
