Girish Chandra

Girish Chandra is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha constituency of Nagina in the state of Uttar Pradesh. He is a member of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Girish has been with BSP since the time he started his political career in 1991. He is among the party’s loyal members and has stood with the party through its ups and downs. Prior to getting elected to Lok Sabha, Girish had also served as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA).

The big break came in 2019, when Girish won the Lok Sabha election from Nagina. He defeated his nearest rival Yashwant Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of more than 1.65 lakh votes. It may be recalled that Girish had contested from Nagina in 2014 general election also. However, at that time, he was defeated by Yashwant Singh. Things changed in 2019, as this election was fought by ‘Mahagathbandhan’, a coalition of Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal. As votes of the three parties were consolidated, Girish won by a huge margin. In 2014 Lok Sabha election, Girish had come third with around 2.45 lakh votes.

Early Life and Education

Girish Chandra was born on January 15, 1964 to Shri Man Singh and Smt. Dahado Devi. He was born in Khushalpur, Moradabad, located in Uttar Pradesh. After completing 12th standard, Girish did his B.A. from Harish Chandra Mahavidyalaya, Moradabad under Ruhelkhand University, Bareilly (UP). He married Virmawati on May 01, 1984.

Political Career

Girish Chandra began his political career in 1991 when he was chosen as the director of cooperative society. In 1994, he was selected as the chairman of sugarcane cooperative society. Next year in 1995, he was elected as the councilor from Moradabad’s ward-4. In 2000, BSP selected Girish to work as the district president of Moradabad. He retained this role till 2006. In 2007, he fought the assembly election from Chandausi and won. In 2012, he again contested from Chandausi. However, this time he was defeated by Laxmi Gautam of Samajwadi Party.

  • 13 Sept. 2019 onwards: Member, Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas; Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment
