It’s been a turn of events in the Goa assembly elections, as the Congress has emerged as the single largest party in the State. It may be recalled that earlier predictions had given BJP a clear victory in Goa and even the exit polls had showed BJP as the largest party in Goa. However, the results declared today have given the Congress 18 seats in the 40-member assembly, making it the single largest party in the State.
But, the question as to who will form the government in Goa remains unanswered, as none of the parties have been able to achieve the target of 21, which is required to form the government. As of now, it’s a hung house, but backroom discussions between major and minor parties may come up with an appropriate solution.
The final tally for Goa is as follows:
- Congress+ – 18
- BJP+ – 14
- Others – 8
- AAP – 0
Experts said that Goa results are a failure for BJP, as even its Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has lost the elections. It’s a failure for AAP as well since it has not even won a single seat. It is being speculated that BJP might seek support from the Maharastrawadi Gomantak Party in an effort to stitch up an alliance to form the government in Goa.
