Air India has discontinued provision of giving them online concession, forcing them to physically visit the booking office.
The reason shown behind withdrawing the services is fraud allegedly committed by some travel agents to book cheaper tickets.
Air India has been giving online concession to employees of armed forces for several years where the user is required to upload official ID to avail 50 per cent discount travel across India in economy class.
However, fraudulent booking done by some agents have come to the notice of the airlines which discontinued this facility from August 1.
However, all the beneficiaries can book discounted tickets physically from the booking counters.
“Yes, we have stopped the online concession scheme for the army. Earlier army personnel used to avail this facility at AI booking centres only,” said an Air India spokesperson.
A senior official said, “Some travel agents, in order to book tickets at a cheaper rate, had made fake certificates and other documents. Many such fraudulent activities have come to light. The decision was made in order to end the foul game.”
Air India chairman MD Ashwani Lohani had introduced online concession facility.
An army officer said, “Booking discounted ticket from the national carrier has now become a task. When the world is going digital, Air India is going offline. They should upgrade the system instead of creating chaos.”
Even recipients of highest bravery award both ex and active military personnel of Indian armed forces will have to manually book the tickets.
