On a day that deals with matters of the heart, the government has drastically reduced the prices of life-saving coronary stents. These specialized medical devices are used to open blocked arteries, a procedure that has saved thousands of people from heart attacks. However, earlier, due to the high cost of such devices, only people with money were able to afford these. Now, in a welcome move on Valentine’s Day, the government has slashed the prices of stents by a staggering 85%. The price of stents has now been capped at Rs 30,000. This will ensure that more and more people can benefit from this life saving device.
The formal announcement for capping stent prices has been made by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), a government body that determines the prices of drugs in the country. NPPA has fixed the prices of stents; the bare-metal stents would be available for Rs 7,260 whereas drug-eluting stents will cost Rs 29,600.
The issue of hospitals charging exorbitant rates for stents has grabbed several headlines in recent times. In certain cases, it was found that hospitals were charging as much as 650% above the cost price of the stents. Now, with the government capping the price of stents, it would benefit thousands of patients across the country.
