In a tragic incident were nature showed its fury, 62 people killed in a raging wildfire ripped through central Portugal. This is described as one of the worst wild fire tragedies of recent years.
As per the official reports, some victims were burned to death in their cars as they tried to flee. Bodies found inside cars.
At least 54 people were injured in the wildfire on Saturday, this includes eight firefighters and a child. Four of the firefighters are in critical condition Sunday.
The blaze spread Saturday to Pedrogao Grande community, forcing residents to flee the area to escape towering flames. Pedrogao Grand is about 120 miles north of Lisbon.
The government fears that the causality numbers may raise as the fire officials inspect the villages affected. Emergency service workers were battling 156 fires across the country on Sunday, Prime Minister Costa said, adding that most of the victims had died in just one of them.
The authorities have placed around 700 firefighters and emergency responders to battle the wildfire.
Several European countries have offered their assistance to Portuguese government to help mitigate the blaze.
The government has declared three days of mourning.
