Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has pardoned 439 prisoners lodged in jails across Gujarat on the 70th Republic Day of India. Chief Minister Rupani of the Bhartiya Janata Party is believed to have taken this decision on humanitarian grounds.
Almost half of the inmates who will be released were serving a life sentence that would have made them spend their entire life in prison. Of these 21 are women, who have completed more than 12 years of their life sentence. There were 100 prisoners, who are said to have completed more than 75% of their jail term.
Those who have been convicted under serious charges of TADA, POTA, murders, rape, robbery, National Security Act and other serious acts, were not pardoned.
