After the CBI’s order was challenged by Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the High Court has agreed to hear his plea. The court will also be hearing the plea filed by the rape victims, who have sought life sentence for Gurmeet Ram Rahim. It may be recalled that the special CBI court had convicted Ram Rahim in two separate rape cases and sentenced him to 20 years in prison. However, now this verdict has been challenged by Gurmeet in the High Court and the same has been accepted by the court. On the other hand, the rape victims have demanded life sentence for Gurmeet in their plea. The High Court will hear both cases together. The court has also asked Gurmeet to deposit Rs 30 lakh, which was the fine imposed by the CBI court. The fine is required to be deposited in the form of FDR in a bank. If the case is decided in favor of Gurmeet, he will get back his money with interest.
However, Gurmeet’s counsel told the bank that all of Dera’s properties and assets have been attached, due to which, it will not be possible for Gurmeet to deposit Rs 30 lakh. The counsel also said that Gurmeet has renounced the world and does not have any money to pay the fine. In the case filed by the rape victims, they have sought life sentence for Gurmeet instead of the 20 years prison term. The counsel for the victims said that Gurmeet misused his prominent position and broke the trust that his followers had in him. As such, he should be given life sentence.
