New Delhi, 21 September 2014: In its bid to further promote and bring to the forefront the potential of young hockey players in Punjab, Hockey India today announced the affiliation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Hockey Academy, Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab), as a new Academy Member.
Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Hockey Academy was set up 5 months back in April 2014 by Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University in Fatehgarh Sahib, with an aim to identify the young, potential talents of the state and to nurture and further prepare them for higher levels of the game. Currently, there are 50 young players including 30 girls and 20 boys, training at the academy. Many of them have already participated either at the district or state level tournaments. This enthusiasm for developing and raising new hockey talents helped Hockey India to arrive at a decision of taking Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Hockey Academy in its fold.
The Academy is also coming up with a brand new artificial turf so that the young players can avail the facility and be better prepared for upcoming challenges at the higher levels.
Speaking on the newly inducted Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Hockey Academy, Hockey India Secretary General Dr. Narinder Batra said, “Being a new academy, the kind of work they have been doing towards the developing of players in their surrounding areas is commendable. We are proud of the association with Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Hockey Academy as we can see their focus towards development of hockey and our joint initiatives to grow hockey at the grassroots level and identify talent.”
