Before you flag the news as frivolous, know that the hospital to treat sick teddy bears has been launched to help children gain hands-on experience with medical procedures and allay any fears that they might have regarding doctors and hospital visits. The teddy bear hospital has been launched at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU). At the launch event, children came to the hospital with their sick teddies and reported the problems being faced by their teddies. Thereupon, the teddy bears underwent a CT scan, post which they were carried to the surgery ward, where they were given anesthesia, prior to their operation. The launch event was attended by Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He attended the event with 4 children.
The idea for the teddy bear hospital was based on a concept submitted to Mohammed Bin Rashid Smart Majlis titled “Create a class in school to treat sick toys”. The idea seemed promising and it was passed on to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). Officials at KHDA reviewed the idea and found that they need to assess its feasibility, for which, they sent the idea to MBRU. The team at MBRU was successful in conducting a working simulation and after a few rounds of tweaks and upgrades, they were able to launch the teddy bear hospital.
