Epilepsy is a kind of neurological disorder which can affect people belonging to any age group. It is caused due to disturbed brain activity and is characterized by unprovoked and recurrent tremors or seizures. Not all cases of epilepsy are the same. In most of the cases, epilepsy is caused due to reasons such as a brain injury, stress, parasitic infection or genetic condition of the brain. On the other hand, there are some cases of epilepsy which take place without any kind of strong provable reason.

So then how can a person suffering from epilepsy deal with it? Well, there are many treatments available which aim to control the disease. However, one of the most sought-after and best treatments available for epilepsy is Ayurveda.

Ayurveda and Epilepsy:

Apasmaram or apasmara is the Ayurvedic term for epilepsy. As per Ayurvedic scripts, epilepsy is a ‘vata disorder’ in most of the cases. Vata kind of seizures mainly happen due to a neural issue while poor sleep, stress, mental exertion, and digestive issues like constipation, gastritis could also be the reasons.

Epilepsy treatment in Ayurveda:

  • According to Ayurveda, a normal yet healthy diet, proper rest and setting a particular time to eat food can help people control the disorder. Stay as positive about the day and your life as you can. Don’t allow tension to creep in your head.
  • Ayurvedic oil massage or Abhayanga, Shirodhara or pouring medicated oil over the head and Thalam or retaining medicated oil on the head can help pacify the mind. Apart from this, nerve tonic herbs such as Brahmi, Aswagandha, Jatamamsi etc can be utilized as well to lessen instances of unusual brain activity. You can also massage the soles of your legs using sesame or coconut oil before hitting the bed. This will offer a cooling and relieving effect to the head.
  • Leading a highly secluded or sedentary life causes blockades in the central nervous system and increases instances of kapha kind of seizures. Such kind of epilepsy is also characterized by excess salivation. The use of herbs like Tulsi, Acorus calamus, etc can prove to be extremely beneficial to cure such epilepsy.

Do remember that as all epilepsy cases are not the same, it’s important to get the patient examined by a professional Ayurvedic physician in order to get the right treatment. Only an expert will be able to get to the root cause of the ailment and suggest the right Ayurvedic treatment for it.
