This Raksha Bandhan, Nizamabad MP K. Kavitha is urging girls and women in Telangana to give their brothers protection along with rakhis, she is recommending that they give them helmets.
The campaign aims to sensitise people towards observing traffic rules.
Ms. Kavitha said. “People will still find excuses not to wear helmets or seat belts. But no one realises that their very life is at stake.”
Ms. Kavitha launched the campaign, on the birthday of her brother, K.T. Rama Rao, MLA and minister in the Telangana government.
She said film-maker M. Vamsi Krishna as her inspiration.
“His film on the anguish of a young girl on Rakhi day, once a happy occasion before she loses her brother in a road accident, moved me,” she told.
“That’s when the idea of a comprehensive campaign came to my mind and ‘Sisters for Change Gift a Helmet’ took shape” she added.
She said Sisters For Change will soon have its own web site to promote several causes for the public good.
“With a large number of girls and women using two-wheelers, brothers too should be gifting helmets to their sisters. Safety has no gender bias”, she said .
