WITH ‘DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR’ AWARD
In recognition of his notable contributions as a corporate leader in the Indian telecommunication industry, Sunil Sood, MD & CEO – Vodafone India has been named the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM, CALCUTTA). The award was recently presented to Sunil Sood at a gala function at IIM Calcutta in Kolkata.Sunil is an IIM Alumnus who graduated from IIM Calcutta in the year 1984.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest honour of the management institute for its alumni and has been awarded to Sunil acknowledging his corporate leadership and accomplishments.
Sunil has been associated with Vodafone India for the past 15 years in different capacities and has played a pivotal role in establishing the organization as not only one of the largest players in the Indian telecom industry, but also the most loved and admired brand. During his tenure, Vodafone India revenues have grown exponentially from Rs 400 crores to Rs 42,000 crores and today is the second largest MNC in the country. Serving over 188mn customers, Vodafone India is playing a pivotal role in supporting the vision of Digital India and Financial Inclusion.
The success of Vodafone India in terms of the revenues, large subscriber base, expanded network coverage, innovative products and enhanced customer experience can be attributed to a large extent to the services and process improvements brought about by Sunil. In addition, to his responsibilities at Vodafone, he is also serving as a Director on the board of Indus Towers, the world’s largest telecom tower company, besides being a member of several reputed industry policy forums such as CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM and COAI.
Committed to the cause of “good for society is good for business”, Sunil has ensured Vodafone becomes a value based organisation where giving and sustainability is part of the culture. He conceptualized ‘Project Drishti’, an award winning initiative in which visually impaired people are given training in Braille and employed as telesales agents so that they can become financially independent. He was also instrumental in leading Vodafone India to partner with the Indian Academy of Paediatrics and launch the world’s largest vaccination reminder free of cost SMS service for its flagship programme ‘Immunize India’ to reduce infant and child mortality rate in India.
