In what is being seen as yet another attempt to encroach on women’s rights, an IIT Delhi hostel has asked its women to dress appropriately. The hostel has put up a notice that asks women to wear “full covered decent western or Indian dresses”. The notice was meant for the House Day, which is an annual event at the institute wherein residents can invite guests in the hostel for an hour. The House Day was to be held on April 20. The notice was put up at Himadri hostel and it has the signature of the warden.
The students said that it was an act of moral policing. The photo of the notice has gone viral on social media and has received criticism from several people. Meanwhile, the warden of Himadri hostel and associate professor at Department of Chemical Engineering Sreedevi Upadhyayula said that the notice is probably a prank since no such dress code has been issued by hostel authorities. She said that she will call a meeting to investigate the matter. However, students said that they had received such directions verbally in the past and this is the first time it has been given as a written notice.
