Aiming to curb the menace of fake news, the Varanasi administration has issued a new order, wherein group administrators on WhatsApp can be arrested if offensive posts are uploaded on that group. The order was issued jointly by District Magistrate Yogeshwar Ram Mishra and Senior Superintendent of Police Nitin Tiwari. The order states that posts that are misleading, factually incorrect or those that are uploaded for the purpose of spreading rumors can result in an FIR being registered against the group administrator.
The order comes in wake of the increasing number of cases where fake news, morphed images and edited videos are being used to create tensions between different communities. The order covers administrators of Facebook groups and other social media groups as well. With this new order, it will be the responsibility of group administrators to monitor the members and content that’s posted on the group. People found guilty will be charged under cybercrime law, Information Technology Act and IPC.
