India bags a convincing win in its opener, defeats Sri Lanka 8-0 in the 17th Asian Games 2014

Incheon (South Korea), 21 September 2014: Playing their first match at the Seonhak Hockey Stadium, Incheon, the Indian Men Hockey team defeated Sri Lanka 8-0 in their opening match of the 17th Asian Games 2014.

It was Rupinder Pal Singh’s 3 goals and Ramandeep Singh’s 2 put India in a comfortable position and 1 goal each contributed by Raghunath, Chinglensana and Nikkin Thimmaiah giving the much required setback to the opponent team.

Following the strategy of putting pressure on the opponents from the onset, the Indian forwards penetrated the D of the opponents immediately. Just 6 minutes into the game it was Nikkin Thimmaiah who scored the first field goal for the team, giving the much required break to India. In the 12th minute, India was given a penalty stroke and was successfully converted by Rupinder Pal Singh taking the scorecard to 2-0 with Sri Lanka trailing. Trying to get back from the early set back the opponent team tried to come back in the match but VR Raghunath had different plans and in the 15th minute he converted the penalty corner opportunity that the team bagged. At the end of first quarter India was leading 3-0.

The second quarter was no different for the opponents as they yet again could not stop the Indian boys from penetrating their D successfully. In the 21st minute Chinglensana scored the 4th goal for his team and the 28th minute saw Ramandeep Singh further add to the scorecard by scoring the 5th goal for India, with 5-0 on scoreboard at the end of second half.

India started the 3rd quarter by continuing their attack on Sri Lanka. The 3rd quarter and 4th quarter saw Rupinder Pal Singh scoring 2 back to back goals in the 45th and 46th minute. While the first was a field goal scored just before the end of the third quarter, his second consecutive goal came immediately at the start of the fourth quarter and was a brilliant penalty corner conversion. India’s 8th goal came in the 59th minute and scored by Ramadeep Singh through a field goal. This gave India the much required opening win and allowing them to open their points score on the Pool Table.
