India gave a thumping defeat to Srilanka by chasing the required target in just 28.5 overs surpassing the previous records. Srilanka which decided to bat first did not capitalise on the good start given by the openers. The first wicket fell only when the score reached 74 on the 14th over with Gunathilaka losing his wicket to Chahal. The next partnership also went for a while before Dickwella got out for 64 and the score by then was at healthy 139-2.
Only after this, Indian spinners scripted a perfect fall for the Srilankan batsman. While Chahal and Jadhav took 2 wickets, Patel took 3. The other two were claimed by Bumrah. Infact the last 7 wickets of Srilanka fell for mere 50 runs.
With 217 to score to win the match, India went to bat their innings. India had a initial blow with Rohit Sharma being dismissed cheaply for 4 when the team score was 23. Virat Kohli then joined hands with Dhawan and they batted till the end and reached the required mark in a comfortable 28.5 overs giving the host nation, the biggest ever defeat in terms of number of deliveries left.
The partnership of 197 also surpassed the previous partnership of 188 runs between Sharma and Dhoni. For India, Dhawan scored a blitzkrieg 132 not out in 90 deliveries. His knock included 20 deliveries and 3 sixers whereas Virat Kohli who batted equally well scored 82 in 70 deliveries with 10 boundaries and a six.
India is now leading this 5 match ODI series with 1-0.
