India says no to UAE paratroopers at Republic Day parade

26jan13In a response to the United Arab Emirates’ request to have the elite UAE paratroopers at the Republic day parade, the Indian authorities have cited security concerns for their inability to accommodate the unit. They also feel that the weather could play spoil sport and may spoil the parade.

The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is going to be the Chief Guest for this year’s Republic Day Parade. The Ministry of Defence has said that a marching contingent from the UAE can be accomodated from the UAE for the parade.

In 2016, India had the Fench soldiers marching down and the Government was hoping to emulate the same this year too. UAE made a request to have paratroopers fly down and this could not be accomodated.

India has seen ite relations improve in the Gulf with PM Modi taking a lot of effort to ensure that strained relations improve. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval have recently ensured that assets worth over Rs 15,000 crores, owned by Dawood Ibrahim were seized by the Government of UAE. This was possible due to improved relations with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi who is also the Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE armed forces.
