India says ready to give up veto power if UNSC awards stable membership

To have stable membership in the UN Security Council, India is ready to skip veto power initially because bargaining chip to get the improvement process on.


In 1945, Security Council was made and has five stable members which include China, United Kingdom, United States, France and Russia. India’s asked for stable membership to have importance as major power, but it was clogged by China and Pakistan.

India’s Permanent Representative at the UN, Mr. Syed Akbaruddin, said Veto issue is significant however; we should not permit it to have a veto above the process of Council improvement itself.

Mr Akbaruddin on behalf of G4 nations, Germany, India, Japan and Brazil said though fresh stable members would have veto powers that current five members have, in theory.
