Presenting her views on H-1B visas before the Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said today during the question hour that Indian IT firms are creating jobs in the United States and not stealing them, as is often thought by many people. She said that the government has provided concrete statistics to US authorities with the goal to change the false perception that Indian IT companies are stealing jobs from US citizens. She presented the data before the Rajya Sabha also, wherein it clearly shows that Indian companies have provided direct employment to 1.56 lakh Americans and indirect jobs to 4.11 lakh Americans.
The minister also talked about the contribution of Indian companies in the economic growth of the United States. She said that during the period between 2011 and 2015, investments worth $2 billion were made by Indian companies in the United States. She also said that Indian companies operating in the United States paid a staggering $20 billion in taxes. The contribution to social security scheme by Indian workers during the same period was $7 billion, she added.
