Need for speed seems to have become an addiction for Indian Railways, as it is currently looking for high-speed locomotives that can clock 200 km per hour. These will be used to run trains on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata routes. The railways is currently looking for suppliers who can provide such high-speed locomotives. It may be recalled that the fastest train in India is currently the Gatimaan Express, which runs between Delhi and Agra at a speed of 160 kmph. The railways now wants to break this record too, which is why it has allocated a budget of Rs 500 crore to purchase 200 kmph high-speed locomotives.
The railways will soon float a global tender to acquire the high-speed locos. The successful bidder will have to provide 10 high-speed electric locos, take care of the maintenance and also provide transfer of technology. The high-speed locos will haul 22-24 coaches at speeds of 200 kmph. The railways has already started manufacturing compatible high-speed coaches called the Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches that can easily run at 200 kmph. These are being manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala.
