Indian Women Hockey Team ready to take on Thailand tomorrow in their opening match of 17th Asian Games

Incheon (South Korea), 21 September 2014: The Indian Women Hockey team is all set to take on Thailand in their opening match of the 17th Asian Games at Soenhak Hockey Stadium in Incheon, South Korea on 22 September 2014.

With Vice Captain Deepika at the helm of defence and Captain Ritu Rani guiding the others at the midfield position, it is the forwards with Rani, Poonam Rani, Vandana Katariya and Navjot Kaur who will play the crucial role of penetrating the defence of the opponents and creating the much required pressure on them.

Both the teams have faced each other in the last edition of the Asian Games at Guanghzou where India had defeated Thailand with a big margin of 13-0. India will once again look at a winning start in the tournament.

Speaking on the game for tomorrow, Chief Coach Neil Hawgood said “The girls are looking forward to starting the competition after being here now for 7 days and are very keen to play the first match and start it with a win. We have had a good build up here and are ready to start with a strong performance against Thailand. The aim is to build pressure on the opponents from the start of the game and keep scoring which will force them to play defensive”.

Speaking on the all important opener tomorrow, Captain Ritu Rani said “We are excited and confident. We will win and will look at continuing the form in all the matches during the tournament. We are confident of reaching the finals and that is our aim as of now. I am looking at drag-flicker Jaspreet Kaur to give us the edge over the opponents with her brilliant penalty corner conversions”.

The Asian Games will see a total of 8 teams divided into two groups. India is placed along with China, Malaysia and Thailand in Pool A.

There will be a live telecast of all the matches of 17thAsian Games on Ten Sports & Ten HD.
