India’s R Vaishali played her best winning 7 out of 9 games and holing on to a draw in the other two which eventually saw her winning the Asian Blitz Chess Championship that was held in Chengdu, China.
Vaishali drew her final round game against Uurtsaikh Uuriintuya of Mongolia which gave her a half point edge over the Iran’s Sarasdat Khademalsharieh that helped her clinch the gold medal. In the overall category, she finished third.
The Chennai player has an ELO rating of 2203. The win saw her being congratulated by the Prime Minister’s Office which tweeted “Congratulations to R Vaishali for winning the gold medal at Asian Blitz Championship. We are proud of her accomplishment: PM @narendramodi”
In the other matches, Vr Aravind Chithambaram finished fourth(7 points), M R Lalith Babu (6.5 points), Vidit Santhosh Gujrathi (6.5 points) and B Adhiban (6 points) finished seventh, eighth & 10th respectively.Surya Shekar Ganguly ended up at a dismal 22nd place despite high expectations running on him. He was followed by Sandipan Chanda & S P Sethuraman in 24th and 25th spots respectively.
In women’s section, Padmini Rout finished third with 7 points. Sowmya Swaminathan finished at 12th spot with 5.5 points and Mary Ann Gomes finished at 16th spot.
By winning the bronze medal in the classical format, Gujrathi has qualified for World Cup 2017 that would be held in Georgia.
