In a development that can further strain relations between Iran and the United States, an Iranian court has sentenced a US citizen to 10 years in jail on the charges of infiltration. Deputy judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejeie said that the US citizen was identified and arrested by Iranian intelligence agencies and he has now been sentenced to 10 years in jail. The name of the US citizen has still not been revealed and it will be done only after the appeals court approves the sentence. The US citizen has appealed against the sentence. The US citizen holds dual nationality, one of US and one of another country, details of which are yet to be revealed.
It may be recalled that Iran has a long history of imprisoning people without actually revealing their identities. Earlier, the chief prosecutor of Tehran had said that there are around 70 spies being held in Tehran’s prisons and the identity of only a few was known. It is said that most of these prisoners hold dual nationalities, one of Iran and one of developed countries such as US and European countries.
