IRMA now headed to Bahamas

The most powerful Category 5 Hurricane Irma has killed at least 10 people across a number of Carribean islands and the toll is expected to go up once it leaves for good. Since it has battered Barbuda making it completely inhabitable as it has destroyed 95% of the infrastructure and communication, the State of Florida, Georgia, Carolina has declared emergency and is on high alert with Florida even ordering evacuations.

The evacuation of coastal areas of Florida and neighbouring Georgia was the biggest seen in the US in atleast 2 decades. Brock Long, head of the US Federal Emergency Management Agency, warned: “It will be truly devastating. The entire southeastern United States better wake up and pay attention.

IRMA is One of the strongest storms ever recorded which created a major destruction in Barbuda, St Martin and Puerto Rico with a wind which reached the top speed of 32o kmph and is not looking to subside yet. It even pounded St Martin, Anguilla and St Kitts and Nevis and is expected to pass near or just north of Puerto Rico on Wednesday afternoon and evening.

“Barbuda right now is literally a rubble. Its a total devestation. The entire housing stock was damaged,” quoted Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda as saying after Hurricane Irma left a trail of ‘absolute devastation’ across the tiny Caribbean island.

The cost of destruction and rebuilding is pegged at $100 million.

The storm is expected to pass just north of the Dominican Republic and Haiti and head towards Bahamas where emergency evacuations have been ordered for six southern islands — Mayaguana, Inagua, Crooked Island, Acklins, Long Cay and Ragged Island.
