Amid rising tension in Jerusalem and the West Bank, Israeli security forces have started targeting Hamas militants operating in the area. The crackdown against Hamas militants comes in response to a rocket attack that was fired from northern Gaza and it had hit southern Israel. The rocket had landed in an open area in the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council. Since the rocket exploded in an open area, it did not cause any major damage or injuries to people. But the Israeli security forces are baffled since the warning system was unable to detect the launch. Israel fears that more such rockets could be fired, which is why it is taking proactive measures by targeting Hamas militants.
In an announcement made by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), it has been stated that 25 Hamas members have been arrested. What is noteworthy is that some senior members of Hamas have been arrested during the crackdown. The mission was carried out in cooperation with the IDF. It is part of the ongoing efforts to reduce tension in the area and to prevent any further violence. “The wave of detentions, that included a number of senior Hamas figures, was part of the preventive efforts of the Shin Bet security service and the Israel Defense Forces against the terrorist organizations, particularly during the past week and due to the tension surrounding the Temple Mount and the unrest in the area,” the Shin Bet said.
