The Jammu and Kashmir coalition Government of the BJP and the Mehbooba Mufti PDP has decided to allot 100 acres of land to Pandits in order to resettle them in the Kashmir valley. The Kashmiri Pandits were driven out of the Kashmir Valley during the 1990s due to the violent extremist Islamic militants who ruled the roost.
The Government has identified parcels of land in 8 places in the Kashmir valley. These parcels will be spread across 10 districts of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. There are about 62,000 Kashmiri Pandit families that are currently registered with the Government and will be getting some land as per this policy. About 40,000 of these families are present in Jammu, Delhi houses 20,000 families and the rest are present all over India.
The Narendra Modi led BJP Government had allocated Rs 500 crores for this cause right after they won the 2014 general election. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had immediately taken up the matter with the then Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah. Mr. Abdullah had taken no action on this and then went on to lose the Assembly elections in the state. He had asked the Government to stay away from this topic as this would attract the attention of the militants. The land would be targeted by militants.
