It was yet another moment of great pride to welcome Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in India. Abe is here on a two-day visit, during which time both countries are expected to sign various agreements related to economic cooperation. On top of the list is the bullet train project, which Abe will launch during his visit. The bullet train project has become possible only because of Japan, as it has provided India a huge loan at very low interest rate. The bullet train project will be between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Abe has come to India with his wife Akie. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Abe today with his characteristic hug at the airport.
After the welcome ceremony, Abe, his wife, and Modi went on a roadshow in an open-roof jeep. They travelled to Sabarmati Ashram, which is considered a home of Mahatma Gandhi. One of the noticeable things about Abe and his wife was that they were wearing traditional Indian clothes. Abe was in kurta-pyjama and sported a blue Nehru jacket, whereas his wife Akie was wearing a red salwaar-kameej and a white stole. Various performances were conducted by artists along the route to show the rich cultural diversity of India. There were huge crowds on both sides of the road, waiving Indian and Japanese flags. The foundation stone for the bullet train project will be laid by Abe tomorrow.
